Deep Ember Design is one woman’s forest-deep, ember-ardent desire to bring wild-rooted grace and mental clarity into the everyday life of the nature-loving, curvy-shaped home sewist.
A Deep Ember garment philosophy tapers towards creating a functional, real-life-oriented, aesthetic wardrobe that accompanies individual curves with a comfortable fit – while cultivating a close-to-nature, DIY-spirited lifestyle.
With curvy sewing patterns (that come in multiple dress sizes and cup sizes), sewing planner spreads and sewing workspace printables, I want to help you sew your dream wardrobe and create a peaceful, enjoyable sewing workflow – that both genuinely fit you and your life.
And, I want to do all of this in a calm way. With room and space to breath. 🧡
We might be kindred spirits, if you…
… have a curvy body shape (regardless of size).
… enjoy vintage, historical and fantasy references in your style aesthetics.
… dream of sewing garments that emphasise your curvy silhouette, but find it hard to find well-fitting patterns.
… regularly get a thundering storm of ideas that makes it hard to focus on planning and finishing your sewing projects.
… struggle with sewing room organisation.
+ … want to learn more about natural materials in clothing: making, wearing, caring and upcycling.

This is me, Katariina.
I’m a professional dressmaker, pattern designer and costumer from Finland. I had sewing as a hobby for over a decade before formal artisan education – and still, with all this knowledge in dressmaking, I still don’t have my dream wardrobe.
This is why Deep Ember Design exists. It was born out of my personal need for a framework that would help me understand what I actually want and need my wardrobe to be like, and give my sewing process a gentle, focus-refining structure.
Close to nature
I grew up in Northern Finland, and being close to nature and the beautifully rugged landscapes has always been the primary inspiration for anything artistic I’ve done. Living through the ever-changing seasons and having an anchored connection to the earth is still how I feel my deepest self.
In Finnish, we have a specific word, “mielenmaisema”, that literally translates into “mind landscape”. Each person has their own unique mielenmaisema. I think this is a description of each soul being an inseparable part of nature; it’s the private, quiet yet powerful source of each person’s creative endeavours.
Besides dressmaking, I have degrees in opera performance (M.F.A) and vocal pedagogy (B.A.). As a professional performer, functionality of clothing is an extremely important factor. I fundamentally believe that work attire doesn’t have to be any less aesthetic or comfortable than any other clothing. I stand for the idea that when you’re wearing clothes that authentically express your identity, you feel better, think better, live better — and work better.
